IAJHSC STATE CONVENTION Eight student council members from St. Mary’s attended the Illinois Association of Junior High Student Councils state convention on April 16-17 at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield. Over 925 students and advisors from all over the state of Illinois attended the convention. While there, the students participated in leadership workshops and listened to guest speaker, Jill Esplin, a nationally known motivational speaker who has devoted her career to the promotion of positive attitudes and the fostering of personal responsibility in young people. St. Mary’s received the honor council award for activities in the areas of citizenship/scholarship recognition and school service, community service and human relations, and school spirit and student involvement. This is the 20th consecutive year that SMS council has achieved this award. Also, at convention it was announced that over $16,000 was raised for our statewide service project – Ronald McDonald House Charities. So our Penny Wars really did go for a worthy cause! In addition, over 4,861 pounds of pop tabs were collected and the proceeds went to the Ronald McDonald House. The IAJHSC has been raising money for the Ronald McDonald Houses for 10 years. Also at convention, Mrs. Hoke was honored with a pin and certificate for 30 years as a student council advisor. Those attending from St. Mary’s were Madison Pfaff, Gracen Giordano, Trevor Runyon, Kieran Krenz, Jack Hoving, Julia Schuler, Elizabeth Meiner and Maddie Krenz. These students were excellent representatives of SMS! A very special thanks to Katie Wille, and Scott and Suzanne Runyon who accompanied Mrs. Hoke and served as chaperones for the trip. All your help and support is truly appreciated.

August, 2009 Students and Parents, Student council will be beginning again soon here at St. Mary’s. I am excited for a new school year with the council. Student council consists of grades 5-8 and there are 7 representatives from each class and they are elected by their own class. Our meetings are after school on Wednesdays from 3:00 – 4:00 in the eighth grade room. Our meeting time after school on Wednesdays has been in effect for many, many years and the coaches have been very supportive in letting student council members attend the meeting before a scheduled sport practice and I thank them for their continued support. Sometimes we schedule a lunch meeting at noon, but the students will be made aware of this a few days ahead. We are instituting a new policy this year regarding absences from meetings. Students are allowed FOUR missed meetings. If they are absent that day from school, that DOES NOT count for a missed meeting. Missing a meeting for an appointment or practice is considered one of the four missed meetings. We have had trouble in the past with members just skipping meetings because they did not want to come. After four absences from meetings, they will be out of the council. We feel this is fair and we want members that are committed to the council. Elections in each class will be held the beginning of next week. In order to run, the student must have a petition signed by classmates and the attached portion of this letter giving them permission to run for student council and to be a committed member. Please sign and return this sheet with your child ASAP. Thank you so much for your support. Student council is a vital part of our school and I am looking forward to another great year with young student leaders at SMS.

Saint Mary’s annual Beginning Band Night will be held on Tuesday, September 1st at 5:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. A representative from the Music Shoppe will be here to execute rental contracts for instruments. Families who already have an instrument should bring the instrument to Mrs. Corrigan for inspection before this meeting. I will demonstrate the various instruments to the class the first week of school and give them each a chance to try out two or three instruments before this night. Then, I will recommend a particular instrument or choice out of two instruments for your child based on physical characteristics, etc. Each family will be given 10-15 minutes to meet with Mrs. Corrigan and watch their child try out the instrument of his or her choice prior to this meeting. Appointment times are on Tuesday, August 25th and Wednesday, August 26th, after school. I will be happy to schedule another time if this will not work for you. If anyone has questions they may call Mrs. Corrigan at school during the day. The beginning band students have one group lesson once a week for 30 minutes. We will probably start lessons around the week of Sept. 14th. This will depend upon the Music Shoppe rental instruments being here by then. I will keep you posted on the actual date during sign up on Sept. 1st.
